The principal of Lufkin Road Middle School died unexpectedly at the school Monday, according to the Wake County school system.

Karen Sinders died earlier Monday, according to a note sent Monday night to families. A cause of death was not provided.

“This is a tragic loss and we wanted to give you the information as quickly as possible so we can be there to support each other in the coming days and weeks,” wrote Jonathan Enns, Southwestern Area Superintendent.

“She was a leader who had immense impact and reach in the school and greater community. She will be greatly missed by the students and the staff here at Lufkin Middle School. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this time of loss.”

The school’s counseling and student services team will be available Tuesday at the school. The school district also partnered with Transitions GriefCare to assist students, staff members and others. The services are free.

“After a traumatic event such as the death of someone they are familiar with, we can expect students to feel anxious, sad, fearful, angry, or vulnerable,” Enns wrote. “They may be scared of losing someone else close to them.”

Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert tweeted about Sinders’ death Monday night, saying he was “deeply saddened by the loss of a joyful friend, colleague and community member.”

“Karen gave everything in her service and leadership as an educator — ensuring all students had the opportunity to thrive,” Gilbert wrote. “Her smile was radiant and always announced her presence.

“I will miss her. On behalf of the Apex community, we send love to her family, friends, loved ones, students, and staff.”

Sinders earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing education from N.C. State University and a master’s degree from Indiana University in educational leadership, according to the Lufkin Road Middle website.

Her biography also includes a quote from Mother Teresa: “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.”
