Wake County will get a new DMV license plate office. Here’s when and where it will open.

Residents of southern Wake County will again have a local Division of Motor Vehicles office that handles vehicle tag, registration and title issues.

A contractor for the DMV will open a new license plate agency office on Tuesday, Aug. 1, in Fuquay-Varina. The office replaces one in Holly Springs that the DMV shut down last summer for violating conditions of its contract with the state.

The new agency will be at 1421 East Broad St. and will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays.

The DMV oversees more than 125 license plate agencies statewide, though all but one are managed by private businesses or local governments. They are separate from the state-run driver’s license offices.

The DMV periodically shuts down license plate agency offices when it finds they aren’t abiding by their contracts or state law.

Last August, the DMV closed the license plate agency on Village Walk Drive in Holly Springs after determining it had misused a process designed to expedite title work for auto dealers and other businesses handling large numbers of vehicles. The closest alternatives for southern Wake residents were in Cary and Angier.

The Holly Springs office opened in 2015 when the state awarded the contract to Chad Price, co-founder and CEO of MAKO Medical Laboratories in Raleigh. The new Fuquay-Varina office will be operated by Alice Parrish.
