Vote now for Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week: Ballots for May 6-12

Welcome to the fourth installment of the 2024 spring season for the Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week voting by high school sports fans.

This week, and every week during the sports seasons, members of the public may vote for a top girls athlete and a top boys athlete.

How do I cast my vote?

All voting is through the two ballots at burlingtonfreepress.com. We will not accept votes through email or through social media.

Voting began May 13, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

How do we learn who wins?

The two winners will be announced in a story published at burlingtonfreepress.com on Friday.

How can I nominate an athlete?

We accept nominations via email: sports@burlingtonfreepress.com (Subject Line: Athletes of the Week nomination).

Sabine Brueck, North Country track and field: At Saturday's 51st Burlington Invitational, the junior established a new meet record in the 300 hurdles (45.62 seconds), tied for the win in the 100 hurdles (15.63) and finished second in long jump (17-2.25) and triple jump (36-7.75) to be named the meet's Ian Carroll Spirit Award winner.

Kenyon Connors, Middlebury lacrosse: The attacking player registered a trio of five-goal games last week in Middlebury's wins over Mount Mansfield (11-9), Colchester (15-4) and Rutland (14-6).

Annie Dufault, Mount Abraham/Vergennes lacrosse: After tallying six goals and an assist in a 11-10 win over Burlington, Dufault's two-goal, one-helper contest in a 17-4 victory over Milton included her 100th career goal.

Brinlee Gilfillan, Colchester track and field: At Saturday's 51st Burlington Invitational, the sophomore was named the meet's most outstanding girls athlete after cruising to victories in the 100 (12.38) and 200 (25.57). She also leaped to a PR of 17 feet, 6.25 inches in long jump for another first-place medal.

Eliza Martin, Essex lacrosse: The freshman tucked away three goals in a 6-5 win over Champlain Valley, and then popped in three more goals including the game-winner in an 8-7 victory over South Burlington under the lights at Munson Field. Martin's winner came with 27 seconds left in regulation.

Raf Campanile, Mount Mansfield track and field: At the Burlington Invitational on Saturday, the junior won pole vault (14-1.25) and javelin (140-1) in PR performances, with the former resetting the school record. Campanile, who also placed third in long jump (20-8), was named the Pavel Dvorak Spirit Award winner.

Cameron Castillo, Mount Abraham baseball: In a 3-1 week for the Eagles, the Castillo wielded a hot bat. The freshman went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs in a 15-8 win over North Country, 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in a 11-2 victory over BFA-Fairfax and 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs in a 9-2 decision over Milton.

Ahmed Diawara, Burlington track and field: At the Burlington Invitational on Saturday, the junior was named the meet's most outstanding boys track athlete after sweeping the 100 (11.21) and 200 (22.41). He also ran a leg on Burlington's victorious 4x100 relay and the Seahorses' fourth-place 4x400 squad.

Lucas Van Mullen, South Burlington baseball: This winter's BFP Mr. Hockey award winner twirled a three-hit shutout with four Ks and one walk while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double in a 6-0 victory over Mount Mansfield. He also doubled in a 7-1 win over Champlain Valley and went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in a 10-1 decision over Essex.

Matias Williams, Champlain Valley lacrosse: After a five-goal, two-assist game in a 17-5 win over Essex, Williams totaled another five goals with one helper in a 16-10 triumph over Mount Mansfield to help CVU push to a 9-0 record.
