Vote now: Who should be the J&C Athletes of the Week for Feb. 4-10?
LAFAYETTE — Six athletes are nominated for the J&C Athletes of the Week award for top performances between Feb. 5-10.
These athletes were selected based on their achievements during the IHSAA Girls State Swim Meet, IHSAA Girls Basketball Regional Championships, IHSAA Boys Wrestling Semi-State Championships and regular season boys basketball games.
Here are the nominees. Polls close Friday at midnight.
Rossville junior wrestler Noah Weaver
Weaver was the lone wrestler of 12 Lafayette Area state qualifiers to win their Semi-State bracket last Saturday. The 190-pound Weaver beat Luke Penola of Zionsville, to claim an individual semistate championship, pinned Northeastern's Caleb Cohee, beat Jaylen Young of Perry Meridian and pinned New Palestine's Colin Whetsel in 1:12 at Case Arena in Frankfort.
Benton Central junior power forward Hunter Sisson
Sisson was dominant and guided Benton Central to two double-digit wins over Rensselaer Central and Tri-County last Thursday and Friday. Scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 71-39 rout of the Bombers. Sisson added a team-high 15 points with six rebounds and four assists against to lead the Bison over the Cavaliers 65-44.
West Lafayette sophomore guard Drew Whitlock
The Red Devils' young class of point guards are ahead of schedule with their development. Whitlock scored 17 points and garnered six assists against rival Central Catholic last Thursday. Whitlock added nine points to beat Tri-County 65-44 last Saturday.
Clinton Central forward Sara Parkison
Parkison scored 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and made four assists to lead Central Catholic to the IHSAA Class 1A Regional Championship over Northfield 58-16 at Bellmont High School last Saturday. Central Catholic (24-1) plays Union City (14-12) in Game 1 of the Semi-State Tournament at 10 a.m. at Case Arena on Saturday. The winner plays either Caston (22-3) or Marquette Cathedral (22-4) at 7 p.m. later in the day.
West Lafayette senior Laura Antalis
Antalis had the best individual local performance at the IHSAA Girls Swimming Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium last Saturday. Antalis swam the 100-yard butterfly in 58.05 seconds and placed 20th of 32 swimmers.
Central Catholic junior guard Carley Barrett
Barrett scored 22 points and was Central Catholic's most effective player in its 57-46 loss to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers in the IHSAA Class 2A Regional Championship last Saturday at Wes-Del High School.
