Vote for Louisville-area high school boys athlete of the week before polls close Thursday

This week's nominees for Courier Journal boys athlete of the week produced clutch performances during the KHSAA postseason.

Voting is underway for The Courier Journal's boys athlete of the week. The poll closes at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the winner will be announced Friday.

James Burnett, St. Xavier, track and field

St. Xavier sophomore James Burnett finished third in the long jump in the KHSAA Class 3A State Track and Field Championship on Saturday, June 3, 2023 in Lexington.

St. Xavier junior James Burnett swept the 100 meters, 200, 400 and the long jump, scoring 40 points to help the Tigers win the team title at the Class 3A, Region Three Track and Field Championships. Burnett posted a personal record in the 100, a school record in the 400 and a season-best time in the 200.

Tyler Manning, Holy Cross, baseball

Holy Cross sophomore Tyler Manning threw a no-hitter and struck out 10 batters, leading the Cougars to a shutout win over Fairdale in the 21st District Tournament. He also had three hits and two RBIs.

Carter Reitz, Butler, baseball

Butler junior Carter Reitz had three hits and four RBIs, leading the Bears to 22nd District Tournament wins over Western and DeSales.

Brendan Ruggles, North Oldham, track and field

Senior Brendan Ruggles won the 400 and 800, pacing North Oldham to third place at the Class 3A, Region Four meet.

Kaine Samuels, Ballard, baseball

Junior Kaine Samuels had five hits and six RBIs to help Ballard defeat Kentucky Country Day and Eastern to win the 28th District championship.
