VOTE: Gastonia, Shelby area nominees for high school basketball players of the week

Here are nominees for the Gastonia and Shelby area’s boys and girls high school basketball player of the week award for Jan. 15-20, 2024.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled from information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to social media.

KM, SOUTH POINT STANDOUTS HONORED: RESULTS: Here are the Gastonia, Shelby area's high school basketball players of the week

Boys basketball

  • Markell Carothers, North Gaston: Averaged 24.5 points for the Wildcats in losses to Ashbrook and Crest.

  • Tye Clay, Burns: Averaged 18.7 points last week, helping the Bulldogs to wins in two of their three games.

  • Jackson Fannon, East Lincoln: Hit eight 3-pointers on his way to a double-double (27 points, 11 rebounds) in a win over West Iredell. Later in the week in a win over North Iredell,  he hit 10 3-pointers as part of a 36-point performance.

  • Drew Hollifield, Shelby: Notched his 1,000th career point as part of a 22-point performance in a win over East Gaston. Later in the week, he had 16 to lead the Golden Lions past Thomas Jefferson.

  • Trent Sherrill, East Gaston: Followed a 20-point output in a loss at Shelby with a career-high 40 points in a 74-64 win over Burns.

  • Griffen Simpson, Gaston Day: Averaged 19 points as the Spartans earned wins over Northside Christian and Hickory Grove Christian.

  • L.J. Smith, Lincolnton: Hit six 3-pointers on his way to 31 points in a win over East Burke. He followed by scoring 18 of a game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter of a victory over Maiden.

Girls basketball

  • Nevaeh Blackwell, Crest: Scored a season-high 25 points Friday in a win over North Gaston.

  • Maddie Frank, South Point: Scored 15 points in a 61-48 win over Crest, followed by a 10-point effort in a rout of Kings Mountain.

  • Lauren Humphrey, Stuart Cramer: Earned a double-double with 15 points and 24 rebounds in a win over Hunter Huss. She followed with 18 points and 15 rebounds to help her team past Ashbrook.

  • Kallie Lusk, Lincoln Charter: Averaged 16 points last week, including a 24-point effort in a win over Christ the King. In addition, the Eagles defeated Mountain Island Charter.

  • Kionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Averaged a double-double last week with 19.5 points and 11 rebounds to help the Yellow Jackets to win over Burns and Highland Tech.

  • Blair Riley, Forestview: Averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and six blocks last week as the Jaguars defeated Kings Mountain and Hunter Huss.

  • Taniyah Thomas, East Lincoln: Averaged 11.3 points per game, along with 5.3 steals to help the Lady Mustangs to wins over St. Stephens, West Iredell and North Iredell.
