Vote: What is your favorite college sports nickname/mascot combination in Texas?

Star-Telegram

The Horned Frogs. The Miners. The Mean Green.

There’s also Red Raiders and the Roadrunners.

Of the 12 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision programs in the state of Texas, more than a few break from the traditional over-used college sports nicknames Oh, of course, we have the Longhorns. And the Mustangs. You’re not going to find those outside of our state.

And then there’s the Owls and the Bears, Bobcats and Cougars. Not original, but well loved.

And, of course, let’s not forget Reveille of the Texas A&M Aggies.

And let’s not confuse nicknames with mascots. Right, Reveille?

There’s Bevo, Boko and Brusier, Human Peruna, Paydirt Pete and Raider Red. Sammy the Owl, Shasta the Cougar and Rowdy the Roadrunner. And, of course, Super Frog of the Horned Frogs.

And let’s not forget The Eagle of North Texas ... not nearly as original as the Mean Green nickname.

In a state filled with rabid college sports fans, is there one nickname and/or mascot that stands out in its originality over the all of the rest?

We’d like your opinion. It’s OK to vote for a rival (we won’t tell your neighbors). It’s OK to share our poll with your team’s Twitter fan base (actually, we’d kind of like it if you do). Just vote, vote, vote. We’ll cut the dozen in half on Sept. 26 and then vote again for the Top 6.

Hey, it’s almost the political season ... so get out and vote. This is one time when it’s completely legal to stuff the ballot box.

The winner gets bragging rights. And they can unofficially lay claim to having the state’s best university mascot.
