Vote: Des Moines Register Iowa Ortho Athletes of the Week for April 22-28

This past week saw the 114th-annual Drake Relays take place.

The meet ran all week, with high school competition picking up from Thursday through Saturday. Despite multiple rain delays, the meet was another great success with multiple records broken along the way.

In addition to the Relays, high school golfers and tennis players began their final push before postseason play and girls and boys soccer continued pushing toward the postseason.

Here are the Des Moines Register's Iowa Ortho female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of April 22-28. Register readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Ethan Zuber, Ankeny

Zuber anchored Ankeny to a Drake Relays record time in the 4x800 relay, and he placed second in both the 3,200 and 1,600.

The Ankeny boys 4x800 team ran a time of 7:39.54 to break the old record of 7:45.3 set by Marshalltown back in 1985. Zuber ran the 3,200 in 8:56.68, which broke the old Relays record of 8:58.27 set by Dallas Center-Grimes' Aidan Ramsey in 2022, but he had to settle for second by Cedar Falls' Jaden Merrick, who won in an even faster 8:55.14.

In the 1,600, Zuber clocked in at 4:09.49, but again he finished behind a Relays record setter.

Tony Anania, Norwalk

Anania is the individual who set the record in the boys 1,600 at the Drake Relays.

Anania crossed the finish line in 4:06.54 to break the old mark of 4:10.76 set by Linn-Mar's Josh Evans in 2014. Anania also placed fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:07.79.

Jaden Damiano, Iowa Falls-Alden

Damiano broke the Relays record in the boys 110 high hurdles — twice.

Damiano ran a time of 13.98 in the prelims to edge the old mark of 13.99 set by Spirit Lake's Jack Latham in 2022. In the finals Damiano clocked in with an even better time of 13.84.

Aiden Flora, Adel-Desoto-Minburn

Flora helped ADM set a new Relays record in the boys 4x100 relay, and he also took second in the open 100 at the Drake Relays.

Flora ran the opening leg for the ADM 4x100 team as the Tigers ran a 41.38 to break the Relays mark of 41.70, set by Ankeny just a few hours earlier in the prelims. Flora's open 100 time of 10.75 edged teammate Brevin Doll's 10.76 for second to Ankeny's Logan Fairchild, who ran a 10.62.

Andrade was an explosive force on offense for the 1A No. 3 West Liberty boys soccer team during a 10-0 victory over Monticello on April 23 at Monticello.

Andrade put eight goals on the board for the Comets. He also assisted on West Liberty's other two goals.
