The Viral Dance Scene from “Wednesday” Almost Looked Much Different

From Wednesday Addams’ soft goth glam to Jenna Ortega’s *incredible* portrayal of the titular character, there’s a lot we cannot stop talking about from Netflix’s Wednesday. But perhaps the biggest phenomenon is Wednesday’s iconic dance performance to The Cramps’ 1981 song, “Goo Goo Muck”.

The scene takes place in episode 4 of the Tim Burton-directed series after Wednesday begrudgingly decides to attend Nevermore’s Rave’N Dance with Tyler. Her spellbinding choreography soon immortalized into a viral dance trend on TikTok, set to a sped-up version of Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Monster.” (Cue the instant humming of “I’ll dance dance dance, with my hands hands hands” — you know you’re doing it.) Since the series debut, #wednesdaydance has climbed to over 1.1 billion (!!!!) views on the clock app.

It turns out, the dance almost looked completely different. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Jenna revealed the original idea.

“Initially they wanted a flash mob, but I thought, no, there’s no way Wednesday would be cool with dancing and encouraging a bunch of people,” she said. Excuse me… a flash mob?!

“So Tim and I — the director, Tim Burton and I — talked about it a little bit, and he said, ‘Yeah let’s not do a circle. Let’s have it be her own thing,’” Jenna continued. “ I remember, about a week before we started, a week before we shot the dance, he chose the song ‘Goo Goo Muck’ by The Cramps, and The Cramps is one of my favorite bands ever. So I was super excited, super pumped.”

The actress then admitted that two days before the scene was filmed, she still hadn’t prepared any choreography. So she forfeited sleep for two days (🤯) and watched videos of British rock bands, archival footage of “goth kids dancing in clubs in the ‘80s,” and perfected the dance moves of the first Wednesday Addams, Lisa Loring.

“Then, on the day, I thought, ‘Well, all right. Let’s just see what happens,’” Jenna revealed. Suffice it to say, she nailed it.
