Village elections 2024: Where the races are, who's running in Steuben, Allegany counties

Contested races in North Hornell and Dansville highlight a busy slate of Hornell-area village elections on tap March 19.

Voters will fill mayor, trustee and justice offices this year. In most villages, candidates were nominated at party caucuses in January.

A handful of area villages, including Andover, Angelica and Wellsville, previously moved their elections to the date of the general election in November.

Polls are open from noon until 9 p.m. on March 19.

March 8 is the last day to register with county boards of election to vote in these village elections.

Here’s a listing of candidates and offices up for election by village:

North Hornell

Three candidates are vying for two seats on the village board. The board terms are for two years.

The Republican candidates are incumbent Trustee Peter DiRaimondo and Elise McCollumn, a former member of the board. McCollumn lost a race for trustee by one vote in 2022.

Joshua Greenthal is running for the board on the Democratic Party line. Greenthal was first elected to the board in 2019 and was re-elected in 2021.

Incumbent Trustee Brian Friedland is not a candidate for reelection.

Where to vote: North Hornell Village Hall, 4 W. Maplewood Ave.

Alfred

Meredith Field and Catherine Powers are the candidates for two seats on the board of trustees. The positions are currently held by Field and Laurette Guild, who is not running for reelection. Voters will elect a pair of candidates to two-year terms.

Where to vote: The courtroom in the Alfred Village Hall, 7 West University St.

Almond

Mayor Dennis George is unopposed for a new two-year term, while Andrea McMahon and Paul Gilbert are the candidates for two seats on the village board. Shelley Flint is the only candidate on the ballot for a one-year term to fill a vacancy.

Where to vote: Municipal Building, 1 Marvin Lane.

Arkport

Mayor George Prete, a Democrat, is running for reelection. There are no other candidates for the two-year term.

Democrat Patricia Amidon and Republican Ryan Beers are the candidates for two seats on the Arkport Board of Trustees. Both Amidon and Beers are incumbents.

Where to vote: Arkport Village Hall Community Room, 6 Park Ave.

Belmont

Incumbent trustees Scott Grantier and Lisa Schmitt, both Republicans, are the candidates for two seats on the board of trustees. The terms are for four years.

Where to vote: Belmont Village Hall, 1 Schuyler St.

Bath

Mayor Michael Sweet is unopposed for a new two-year term.

Trustees Karen Causer and Jeffrey Muller are running unopposed for two-year terms.

Where to vote: Bath Village Hall, 110 Liberty St.

Canaseraga

Edna Brewster is the only candidate for mayor, having been nominated by Democrats and Republicans at January caucuses. The mayoral election is for one year of an unexpired term.

Terry Gordon and Shawn Brewster were both cross-endorsed and are the candidates for a pair of two-year terms on the Canaseraga Village Board.

Lisa O'Dell is the only candidate for a one-year term on the village board to fill a vacancy. O'Dell was also nominated by both political parties.

Where to vote: Canaseraga Village Hall, 10 Main St.

Canisteo

A pair of trustee seats, both for two years, are up for election. Two candidates are running for two seats. They are David Robinson, an incumbent, and Greg Woodworth.

Where to vote: Canisteo Town Hall, 8 S. Main St.

Cohocton

Incumbent trustees Kathryn Gray and Mathew McCarthy are seeking reelection to two-year terms. No other candidates are on the ballot.

Village Justice Robby Anger is running unopposed for a new four-year term.,

Where to vote: CDC Building, 71 Maple Ave.

Dansville

Republican Kathy Button and Democrat Dennis Wiedman square off in a special election to fill the remaining three years of a four-year term on the board of trustees. Button was appointed to the village board after Trustee Floyd Sick died last October.

Where to vote: The North Dansville Town Hall, 14 Clara Barton St.

Wayland

There are no offices up for election this year. The next village election will be in March 2025.
