Solange Knowles Talks Natural Hair and Not Being That Interested in Fashion

Solange Knowles is a singer/songwriter (she's getting ready to release her third album), mom and proud Texan girl at heart. A fashion icon and crusader for natural black hair? Not so much.

In an interview with Lurve Magazine she confesses that while it's extremely flattering to be recognized for her great sense of style, she's "never really been that interested in 'fashion.'" She does, however, admit to taking pride in her personal style, which didn't always make best dressed lists. "Look at my fashion choices back in the day. You know how people say 'Who let her walk out the house that way?' or 'She needs more people?!

She also realizes how lucky she is to be invited to fashion events, and figured out how to have fun at them. "Once I really defined my expectations in terms of how to navigate through the fashion world without getting myself too invested, I've had a hell of a lot of fun," says the spokesmodel for Madewell. While she's already embarked on a collaboration with a major retailer, her dream collaboration is with performance artist Nick Cave.

It's with that sense of fun and honesty that she's preserved her sanity while also navigating her role as "the natural hair brigade's relunctant Patron Saint," as Lurve calls her. "I'm actually really trying to navigate my feelings on the entire hair issue and it's tough doing that publicly," she explains.

It was never her intention to come across as "ranty and aggressive" when she took to her Twitter to adress the natural hair issue. "I really, truly was not even aware that there was a natural hair system in place to measure the texture of your hair," she said, referring to the article in which her natural hair was criticized. "At that point I thought to myself, 'This is really crazy. That these people know more about my hair than the human that even carries it!' I went to my Twitter and sort of impulsively expressed that. I don't regret it one bit, but sometimes trying to put how you feel in an one-hundred forty character structure is not really successful."

Since then, she's broken off her partnership with black beauty company Carol's Daughter, for which she was a spokesperson. "I was constantly fighting for the right message to be heard. The message that the way we wear our hair is a personal choice, there's no right or wrong way."

We couldn't agree more, Solange, even though you definitely make our list as a style icon.
