Meet the Man Behind Michelle Obama's Inaugural Coat
Thom Browne. You may not know that name if you're not deeply invested in fashion (namely men's fashion) – but you definitely did on January 21st, 2013, as First Lady Michelle Obama wore a dress and jacket by this American designer.
Thom Browne was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and received an economics degree from the University of Notre Dame. Now, we had to ask, how on earth does someone go from economics to high fashion?
Well, he began working as a salesman at a Giorgio Armani showroom, and later was picked up to lead the Creative Development Team of Club Monaco. After several years with Club Monaco, he left to start his own line. A creative mind, plus the degree and training to run a business -- sounds like a great combination to us!
He made his name with a menswear line that launched in 2003, and followed up with a womenswear line more recently, in 2011. The gorgeous coat that we saw on the First Lady was actually inspired by a necktie straight from his men's line.
"She stands for strength and confidence, and that's what I wanted to design for her," the designer said of the First Lady wearing his design. He also stated to multiple news outlets how "humbled" and "proud" he was that she chose his garments, and how lovely she looked in them.
We've seen before what Michelle Obama wearing a designer's item can do (and the same can be said for Kate Middleton!) – so we can't wait to see what's to come for Thom Browne and his line. We just know that women everywhere will be itching to wear his clothes, so we hope this renowned menswear designer is ready for lots of female fans!
