A pregnant Kim Kardashian covers CR Fashion Book
Carine Roitfeld's third cover for her year-old fashion mag CR Fashion Book stars none other than Kim Kardashian.

We were certainly surprised when we first saw the cover image on Riccardo Tisci's Instagram, but on second thought, we could have seen it coming.

Roitfeld and Tisci are longtime friends and collaborators, and ever since she started dating Kanye West, Kardashian, too, has joined Tisci's little inner circle. "Great experience #family#love#friends @kimkardashian @crfashionbook," he captioned a photo of Roitfeld holding up the issue. Plus, we all know Roitfeld likes to shock.

According to WWD, it was Tisci's idea to put Kardashian on the cover. He art-directed the cover shoot, while Roitfeld's other favorite collaborator, Karl Lagerfeld, shot it (this was before Kardashian may or may not have copied his show inspiration). "It was hard work. I'm a grandma," Roitfeld said of the shoot. "But I learned from Karl to never be tired."

Kardashian was very pregnant at the time of the shoot, which Roitfeld embraced. "Pregnancy is something that I always love," she told the trade. "It's about hope and the future and a new baby." Hope, specifically, is the issue's theme.

Another factor that made the shoot interesting was pairing Tisci and Lagerfeld–two Paris-based designers–together. "Riccardo is not frightened by Karl," said Roitfeld. "A lot of people are frightened by Karl–he's a legend and an icon. But Riccardo is very cool with him. They have fun together."

She also wants to make sure people don't confuse CR with one of the celebrity weeklies Kardashian is more commonly on covers of: "This is not something for a gossip magazine that goes into the trash. This is a magazine that is a collector's item."

The issue also features a reverse cover and spread shot by Bruce Weber, which sees model Emily Ratajkowski (from the Blurred Lines video) in a threesome, and Karlie Kloss nude in Montauk.

After the Met Ball, this has to be Kardashian's most important fashion industry moment. We wonder if she'll keep up this momentum as a newly blonde mother. We also wonder if other fashion glossies will follow suit and put Kardashian on their covers. It worked for Kate Upton.
