7 Star-Studded Reasons Why the Beanie Isn't Just for Lazy Days

Rihanna takes a decidedly sporty take on the knit-hat trend, pairing the head warmer with a varsity jacket, a printed t-shirt, black skinny jeans, and high-tops.

Cara Delevingne offset a rocker-chick ensemble (how much do you love her railroad-stripe jeans?) with a preppier looking monogrammed beanie.

Dree Hemingway gave us two statement pieces to obsess over — her sparkly two-toned Balmain jacket and that vibrant orange beanie.

Ellie Goulding gave her laid-back beanie an edged-up appeal via skintight leather leggings.

Chloe Sevigny topped off a borrowed-from-the-boys pantsuit with a much girlier (read: embellished) beanie.

In a much different look, Cara served up a subtle colorblocking formula. One part blue jacket, one part red beanie equals serious style-setter fodder.

Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale added a black-knit beanie to her already Fall-appropriate attire, but you really can never have enough textural intrigue.

If you had asked us pre-Jil Sander Spring '12 if we thought the beanie would be synonymous with "chic hat," we would have said no. Don't get us wrong, we practically live in them come Winter, but this season, we're definitely singing a different tune. In fact, in the aftermath of Jil Sander's ladylike veiled iteration, made popular by Anna Dello Russo, we're spotting a new crop of luxe slouchy knit beanies atop some stylish starlets' heads.

For one, model Cara Delevingne is hardly without one, whether it be a sportier monogrammed version or a bright red ribbed topper. Rachel Bilson counts the beanie as an off-duty wardrobe staple, and Rihanna styles her favorite varsity beanie with her usual lineup of kicks, skinny jeans, and covetable outerwear. If you're wondering how to incorporate the laid-back headgear into your own outfit, we suggest easing into it. Start off more polished - i.e., add it to a sleek black maxi dress and blazer combo - and then, for your weekend warrior looks, make it the accessory statement piece by wearing a brighter color on top. For even more beanie-wearing inspiration, this star-studded entourage is just the thing.
