11 beauty lessons we learned from Lauren Conrad

Despite sporting dramatic smoky eyes on her April 2014 Allure cover, Conrad has admitted she's typically eye-shadow-averse. Instead, she sticks to her signature classic cat-eye swoop of black eyeliner—and she's completely mastered the technique, which she recently shared with us:

1. Find a liquid liner you're comfortable with."I use Mark," she says. "I order them in bulk and keep them in my refrigerator. I go through one a month."

2. Lean on a counter."Rest your hand to be steady," says Conrad.

3. Start at the outside of your iris. Or, as Conrad says, "about 1:30" on your right eye (and 10:30 on your left one) and work in. "You line the lid along the lash line," she says, and fill in the whole thing with a smooth line.

4. The finale? Flick it out to a little wing. "I draw the liner up toward where my eyebrow ends," she says.

Other black liquid liners to try:
1. Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion
2. Dior DiorShow Art Pen
3. Lancôme ArtLiner Precision Point Eyeliner in Noir

Conrad is living proof that you don't have to be a gym rat to get toned. In 2009, she told Shape her favorite types of exercise take place in the great outdoors. "[I] like doing outdoor stuff: tennis, bike riding, kayaking, stand-up surfing, hiking in the canyons around L.A.," she said at the time.

Yes, she's the quintessential California girl—with perfectly bronzed skin to match. But it's not from the sun. Even through all those years spent in bikinis in the O.C., Conrad has been liberal with the SPF. "I'm always wearing sunscreen. When I was 14 or 15, they removed precancerous moles on my back, and ever since then, I wear sunscreen every day. When we go on vacation, I pack bottles of it. And when we have pool parties, I'm like the mom who runs around and puts sunscreen on everybody. I'm the giant-hat lady," she told us during her 2014 Allure interview. Instead of frying in the sun, go the safer route with bronzer and self-tanners, like LC.

Bronzers we love:
1. Dolce & Gabbana The Bronzer in Desert
2. Sonia Kashuk Undetectable Crème Bronzer
3. Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base

In 2009, Conrad posed on the cover of Shape magazine wearing a bikini—and showing off a newly toned bikini body to match. "I've found when all I'm eating is really fresh, healthy foods, I stop craving pizza and burgers," she told the magazine, adding that she switched to snacks like hummus, sliced turkey, cucumbers, and apples to fight food cravings. "When I have these foods in front of me, I find it easier to avoid high-calorie binges," she said.
Sure, Conrad likes to strike a chicken-wing pose. But say what you will, this girl knows how to look amazing in photo after photo. She's gotten to know what works—and for her, it's a slight head tilt, a hand on her hip, and a relaxed smile. OK, we admit it: Posing like poultry suits her.
She may run five (yes, five) businesses, but Conrad is nothing if not grounded. Proof? She still does much of her own primping. "I do my own nails. I don't really get manicures," she told us on the set of her last Allure cover shoot. She also regularly posts tutorials on her website, like a recent video demonstrating how to get loose waves and a popular fishtail-braid how-to. Impressive.
It's tough to find a hairstyle Conrad hasn't tried: She's worn voluminous topknots, pretty braids, faux bobs, romantic updos, a pink dip-dyed ponytail, beachy waves, the list goes on.... And she's inspired us to change up our same-ponytail-every-day routine.

In 2005, most of our brows were probably similar to Conrad's: The too-skinny-tadpole look was a trademark of the times. But she's since demonstrated that it's possible to bounce back, and now her fuller arches are among the best we've seen.

Still struggling with sparse brows? Try this regimen:

1. Retire the tweezers. It takes three to four months to see a real change, and up to a year for brows to grow back entirely.

2. Mind the gaps. Fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil (eyeliners are too creamy and heavily pigmented). Go one to two shades lighter than your hair if you're a brunette, or try taupe if you're blonde.

3. Shape up. Define the arch (the brow's highest point, just beyond the iris as you look ahead) by yanking a few hairs below it. Eyebrows that fall short look aging, since the ends naturally thin as we get older.

Conrad pretty much pioneered the hairline braid—or at least made it really, really popular. She first started wearing it around 2008, when she was growing out side-swept bangs. (And who wasn't doing that in 2008?) The trend caught on quickly, and we're still wearing it—hairline braids are especially useful on day three of a blowout.
"I find that the more products I use, the more issues I have," she told us. "So I rotate every night between a mild wash and a light scrub. I use Egyptian Magic on my skin morning and night. Once a week, I do a light peel, like HydroPeptide." We can get on board with that. During Conrad's 2012 cover shoot, she told Allure, "The best beauty advice I've gotten is just take care of yourself. Wash your face, moisturize, don't overprocess your hair or overstraighten it. Just take care of [everything], because hair and makeup can do a lot, but [they] can only do so much."

Who knew that the girl next door from Laguna Beach would become not only a fashion designer and author but also a full-on style guru made for the Instagram age? Conrad has published a beauty book and posts tutorials on her site laurenconrad.com, but we got inspired just by observing LC's best hair and makeup looks.
