All AI needs is a smile to try to determine your gender. Researchers at the University of Bradford studying AI found that AI looks at a smile’s broadness to determine if it belongs to a man or a woman. This led the team to develop an algorithm that can analyze a person’s facial expressions — specifically their muscle movement during a smile. The algorithm was able to predict the correct gender 86% of the time. However, this process is based on a societal perception of gender and the team has acknowledged that it isn’t perfect. So, it’s working to address how AI could better understand gender identity versus the sex of the subject of the test (where sex is related to anatomy, and gender is related to identity) the team also hopes to improve current recognition systems that have a bias towards white males, but by studying other expressions like fear or surprise. Hopefully facial recognition will become much better in the future.
