This company wants to hook lonely men up with sex dolls. Exdoll makes sex dolls for companionship, and a team of engineers is working to make them interact so that they can talk and hold a conversation. Each $4,000 robot connects to Wi-Fi and is controlled by either an app or speech recognition. The company is thinking about artificial intelligence so that the dolls can appear more life-like, and eventually “cure lonliness” — or even take care of the elderly. Thanks to a nationwide one-child policy, China is home to 33.6 more men than women and has a rapidly aging population. Exdoll Marketing Director, Wu Xingliang explained, “I want to see that there’s someone there to give me company. If those people want a doll, it’s not to address a physical need, in fact for many they want company. They have a psychological need I think the spiritual need is greater.” Exdoll’s focus is to have the most realistic dolls possible. It currently produces 400 custom dolls each month. Some are smaller in stature, catching the attention of people on social media who say the dolls can enable pedophilia and exacerbate sexist stereotypes. The company suggests that size is only related to mobility, and will continue to contribute to China’s $6.8 billion industry of sex toy manufacturing.
