Pilot Norman Surplus took off in his gyrocopter on Thursday (June 4) in an attempt to set a world record with a coast-to-coast flight across the United States. Surplus left Tillamook, Oregon bound for Portland, Maine, hoping to break the world record for gyrocopter flight. He expects his quest to take about three weeks, taking him through a least a dozen different states, from Idaho to Maine. A gyrocopter uses an unpowered rotor, along with a motorized propeller.
