'Great Physical Condition' Helped Missing Runner Survive Wilderness

After an exhaustive search from the air and even from the ground in darkness and mounting snow, Robert Root was found just two and a half miles from the start of the Placer County trail that became his own personal journey into disaster. Root spent three daunting days outside alone, only wearing running shoes, shorts and a light jacket. The nights reached freezing temperatures with falling snow.
