Competitive Eaters Take on World's Hottest Pepper

These competitive eaters scarfed down the world’s hottest pepper — eating as many as they can in 60 seconds — at the Brooklyn Hot Sauce Expo’s Carolina Reaper Eating Contest. The Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper on Earth, and the strongest ones can be even hotter than pepper spray. Some of the contestants were reaper veterans, hoping to break the Guinness World Record for most Carolina reapers eaten in one minute (120 grams). Some were rookies just hoping to survive. Each contestant was given an entire bowl of Carolina Reapers and had to eat as many as they could in one minute without puking for another minute afterword. After that, their main priority is recovering from the pain. No one beat the Guinness World Record this time, but the reigning record-holder Greg Foster won the contest. “When I’m on stage, I don’t hear the crowd, all I see is that tiny, little bowl of peppers. And it’s just about focus, and the real hard part is that first bite or two, when you get that initial shock from that pepper, because it’s just the spiciest thing in the world,” said Foster. “I feel like a rock star, the endorphin rush, the thrill of victory.
