This is the first Indian woman to fly a fight jet solo. 24-year-old Avani Chaturvedi is the first woman to graduate fighter pilot training in the India Ari Force, after a ban on women flying combat planes was lifted in India in 2015. Chaturvedi’s first flight was 30 minutes of major history as she zoomed over the Jamnagar Air Base in Gujarat, India. The fighter jet Chaturvedi flew has the fastest landing and takeoff speed in the world at more than 201 miles per hour. On February 21, the Indian Air Force tweeted, “#TouchTheSkyWithGlory : Fg Offr Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian Woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo, when on 19 Feb 18 she flew a MiG-21 Bison aircraft in her first solo flight. The photo attached has been taken after her solo sortie.” Chaturvedi was one of the first three women to participate in pilot training for the Indian Ari Force — 1.5 years later, she’s the first to graduate. Bhawana Kath, who was commissioned alongside Chaturvedi, is expected to complete her own flight soon. The pilot is also serving as inspiration on the web. @MamataOfficial recently tweeted, “Heartiest congratulations to Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi. The first Indian woman to fly fighter aircraft solo. You are an inspiration for many young girls in our country.”
