Facebook has a new feature called 3D photos, and it's exactly what it sounds like. To make them, a dual-camera phone first takes lots of pictures and extracts depth data. These many depth-enhanced photos are stitched together with a unique algorithm. Finally the images themselves are mapped onto the 3D mesh, producing a tiny virtual world. It works on people and ordinary snapshots - you can try it when it rolls out later this summer.
