The Economist Intelligence Unit rates safe cities by their performance based on personal safety, infrastructure safety, health security and digital security. Based on their data the safest cities in the world are: 10. New York City, USA: In 2013, New York had 335 homicides, an all-time record low. 9. Melbourne, Australia: Life expectancy in Melbourne is 86 years. 8. Toronto, Canada: Toronto has more than 1600 public parks 7. Zurich, Switzerland: Zurich has the best health security in the world thanks to its universal health care system. 6. Sydney, Australia: Australia has strict gun laws, though guns are not banned. 5. Amsterdam, Netherlands: EIU ranks Amsterdam as one of the top in global food security. 4. Stockholm, Sweden: Stockholm boasts the best in digital security in all of Europe. 3. Osaka, Japan: Osaka’s murder rate is .79 for every 100,000 people, lower than any major U.S. city. 2. Singapore, Singapore: Traditional crimes like burglary and theft are at the lowest point in decades. 1. Tokyo, Japan: Even petty crime is unusual in Tokyo, the world’s safest city.
