Miami’s already-successful free agency period just yielded some more good news for the Heat.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, two-time All Star Victor Oladipo has agreed to return to Miami in 2021-22.

This news comes as somewhat of a surprise to many around the NBA community. According to reports from the opening day of free agency Monday, “several” NBA executives believed Oladipo would go unsigned for at least the new few months until “he can show he is ready to play,” per Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.

Injury issues have plagued Oladipo’s career over the past few seasons. After averaging a career-high 23.1 points and a league-leading 2.4 steals per game in 2018-18, the former No. 2 overall pick suffered a season-ending ruptured quadriceps tendon in 2019. Soon after his return to the court in 2020, he was traded to Houston on Jan. 13, 2021. After averaging 21.2 ppg through 20 games with the Rockets, the 29 year old was traded again to Miami.

In just his fourth game with the Heat, Oladipo re-injured his right quadriceps tendon and was forced to undergo season-ending surgery.

After a successful surgery on May 13, Oladipo reportedly could be back on the court sometime in November, per Tom Brew of Sports Illustrated.

Though Oladipo may be an addition later on in the season, the Heat are looking primed for a solid year in 2021-22.

Miami signed six-time All Star Kyle Lowry on the opening day of free agency to a three-year, $90 million contract. The team also added veteran forward P.J. Tucker following his championship run with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Returning Miami star Jimmy Butler signed a four-year, $184 million max deal with the Heat on Tuesday.

With this improved roster, the 2020 NBA runners-up will look to improve on last year’s disappointing first-round exit.
