Veterans Day commemorations begin this weekend

Celebrate our nation's heroes at these upcoming Veterans' Day events:

Sunday, Nov. 5

91st Annual Brunswick Veterans Day Parade

Sunday, Nov. 5 - opening ceremony 1 p.m., parade starts 2 p.m.

Square Corner Park

19 E. Potomac St.

Brunswick, Md.

Rain or shine. Keynote speaker and grand marshal will be retired U.S. Marine Corps Major General James W. Lukeman. Command Sergeant Major Michael Dills of Fort Detrick will serve as master of ceremonies. Also participating will be the Fort Detrick Color Guard and Brunswick Elementary School Choir. Military veteran and musician Darryl Brenzel will perform the National Anthem. Remarks by Brunswick Mayor Nathan Brown and Maryland State Senator William Folden. Parade has 100 entries. Sharpsburg Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

Saturday, Nov. 11 - 11 a.m.

On the square — Intersection of Main and Mechanic streets

Sharpsburg

Keynote speaker Antietam National Battlefield Park Ranger and U.S. Air Force veteran Keith Snyder, with Michael Clopper American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard and saxophone soloist Mike Lushbaugh. Veterans in attendance will receive a small token of appreciation. Hosted by Antietam Unit 236, American Legion Auxiliary.

The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace

Saturday, Nov. 11 - 7:30 p.m.

Shepherd University

Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Shepherd University Masterworks Chorale, under the direction of Steven Grives. Dr. Eric Waggoner, executive director of the West Virginia Humanities Council, will describe the council's West Virginia Cemeteries Project and will profile several veterans. $15 general; $10 Shepherd faculty, staff, alumni, senior citizens, active-duty military, and students ages 18 and younger; free Shepherd students with valid Rambler ID.
