Nearly a year after first announcing its opening, VetCheck Pet Urgent Care is finally open in Bloomington at the Whitehall Plaza on West Third Street.

On Feb. 1, its opening day, it had four walk-in clients in the first hour.

“It’s been very busy,” said Caitlyn Arnett, office manager and technician assistant for VetCheck Bloomington. “It’s clearly filling a very big hole.”

VetCheck offers walk-in, non-emergency urgent care services for cats and dogs, ranging from poison control to microchipping and surgeries. They also offer in-house lab testing for bloodwork and urine, radiology services, end-of-life care and an in-house pharmacy.

“It’s all brand new and state of the art,” Arnett said. “Some clinics will send bloodwork out and then it’s about 24 hours, and human medicine can be a couple of hours for bloodwork to be read. We can usually run it within 30 to 45 minutes.”

The Bloomington location will be open from 1 to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays with plans for expanded hours in the future.

The pet urgent care clinic, at 3251 W. Third St., is the first of its kind in Bloomington. Arnett said prior to Bloomington location’s opening, VetCheck’s nearest location in Fishers was regularly getting walk-in clients from Bloomington and the surrounding areas, with people driving more than two-hours in some cases.

“So they kind of already knew the need, and we’ve been in the works for a little while now,” Arnett said.

Arnett said she hopes VetCheck will help alleviate the burden of clients on Bloomington’s nearby veterinary hospitals.

“We’re not competing,” Arnett said. “We’re here to help each practice see the patients that they don’t have the ability of seeing right away.”

VetCheck’s Bloomington location was first announced more than a year ago, but its opening date was pushed back several times due to various construction and supply chain delays and one of the location’s founding owners backing out of the location.

Arnett said like a human urgent care, VetCheck’s services may be slightly more expensive than a general practitioner. But the veterinary urgent care offers flexible pricing options through providers including Care Credit and Scratch Pay, which offer loan and credit services geared toward health and veterinary costs.

The Bloomington location is currently headed by Dr. Kent Seamonson and another visiting veterinarian. The vet urgent care is looking to hire more workers, including another assistant veterinarian, veterinary nurses, technician assistants and customer service representatives.

“As we add more doctors to the practice, our hours will expand,” Arnett said. "We're just here for anytime someone has an illness or injury pop up."
