South Carolina is ending its summer on a high note.

USC landed a verbal commitment from three-star athlete Vicari Swain on Friday over finalists that also included Mississippi State, Maryland, Duke, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt.

The Carrollton, Georgia product is rated the No. 763 player and No. 67 athlete in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Why South Carolina?

“All the relationships with the coaches, and the atmosphere with the fans was amazing,” he said in a ceremony with friends, family and teammates at Central High School that was streamed live on Instagram.

Swain has the versatility to play either defensive back or receiver at the college level, though it remains to be seen where he sticks. He played both sides of the ball for Central High as a junior, recording 855 yards receiving and eight touchdowns on 47 catches. Swain added another 28 tackles, six interceptions — three of which he returned for touchdowns — one fumble recovery and a kick block.

“I can see myself playing early, a little bit, if I’m ready,” Swain told Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC earlier this summer. “They want me to play both sides. I should have a chance to get in on something because they want me to play as an athlete who can do whatever.”

He becomes the sixth player from Georgia to commit to the Gamecocks this cycle, joining four-star running back Dontavious Braswell, four-star offensive lineman Trovon Baugh, three-star safety Jalon Kilgore, three-star receiver CJ Adams and three-star offensive lineman Jatavius Shivers.

South Carolina now has 18 commitments in a 2023 class that ranked No. 18 nationally and seventh in the Southeastern Conference, per 247Sports’ Team Recruiting Rankings.
