Vanessa Bryant honors Kobe and Gianna on 1-year anniversary of their deaths: ‘It still doesn’t feel real’

Vanessa Bryant honored the “beautiful, kind and amazing” Kobe and Gianna Bryant on the one-year anniversary of their tragic deaths, writing, “It still doesn’t feel real.”

In an Instagram post early Tuesday, Vanessa shared a letter that was recently given to her by a friend of Gianna, who was 13 when she, Kobe and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, 2020, in Southern California.

“There are times I get into a pit of despair thinking about her and what she could’ve accomplished had she had a couple more years,” reads the letter from the friend, Aubrey. “But recently I have been thinking about the mark she did leave on this Earth.

“Her fights for equality in sports made the world reconsider [its] opinions, she along with Mr. Bryant, set the wheels in motion,” the letter continued. “But on a lower level, on behalf of every person who came across her, I can say that she changed our lives. Her simple actions made all of us a better person, and I believe that the results of this will never stop appearing.”

Kobe Bryant, a five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, was 41 when he died. He and Vanessa were married for nearly 19 years. Gianna was the second oldest of their four children.

On Tuesday, Vanessa, 38, wrote she misses “my baby girl and Kob-Kob so much.”

“I will never understand why/how this tragedy could’ve happened to such beautiful, kind and amazing human beings,” Vanessa captioned the Instagram post. “It still doesn’t seem real.”

Kobe Bryant was posthumously elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame less than three months after his tragic death in a helicopter crash. Bryant, along with Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and six others, will live out as basketball legends in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Toward the end of Aubrey’s letter, she expressed hope that Vanessa can “catch a glimpse of joy in who the daughter you created and raised was.”

“You did it right Mrs. Bryant,” Aubrey continued, “and we are all eternally grateful to you.”

Vanessa echoed Aubrey’s words in her Instagram caption: “Kob, we did it right. Gigi, you still make mommy proud. I love you!”

Former Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez also paid tribute Tuesday.

“I can’t believe it’s been one year since we experienced the tragic loss of my brother, my friend, Kobe Bryant. It still doesn’t feel real,” Rodriguez tweeted.

“Kobe was so much more than just a basketball player and he was destined for even more greatness.”
