Vanderbilt baseball has lost seven straight games in its rivalry to Tennessee, but none has held the same kind of stakes as the three awaiting this weekend.

In 2022, the series at Hawkins Field was in just the third week of the SEC season. In 2023, the series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium was halfway through conference play.

This season, it comes with two weeks to go — and with the Vols (40-9, 17-7 SEC), newly minted as the No. 1 team in the country, coming to Nashville to face a Commodores team on the verge of an epic late-season collapse.

On April 26, after a win over Mississippi State, Vanderbilt (33-16, 11-13) needed just two more wins to be secure in an NCAA regional bid, and five more wins in its remaining 11 games to be in the hosting mix.

Instead, it lost each of its next five SEC games.

Rivalry aside, Vanderbilt simply can't afford getting swept again. History looms: It has not defeated a No. 1-ranked team since 2016.
