UTPB College of Business Assistant Professor Gurdeep Singh Raina is committed to broadening his student's knowledge by hosting a variety of guest speakers in his classes every semester.

Raina says his goal is to give students an understanding of the business world outside of the classroom.

"I feel that it is my responsibility to make my students career ready. These speaker sessions give them an opportunity to learn things not covered in classroom books," said Raina.

Raina hosts a variety of guest speakers throughout the semester. From oil and gas production, to the restaurant business, owners of marketing firms, business owners, and entrepreneurs; students learn about a variety of different industries.

"One thing the students like above everything else, is to get to know the person behind the role: their story. Frankly, it fascinates me as well," said Raina.

The learning that happens during these presentations, he believes, sets the students at a higher level of understanding.

"The information nuggets and insights about various industries is a real knowledge goldmine for them. I have also noticed that these sessions provide them with an opportunity to evaluate and/or alter their career choices," said Raina.

To connect with guest speakers Raina reaches out to anyone and everyone he knows to network. He also brings many of the speakers' gifts to thank them for visiting our campus. His dedication to expanding his student's education is admirable.

"It's funny but I have had some entrepreneurs convinced of such sessions just by visiting their business locations and talking to them, for example, restaurant owners of places where I went for dinner or a car dealership owner where I went to get my car serviced. I think there are a lot of ways that one can find speakers, and we are so blessed here in West Texas that most agree to support student development," said Raina.
