Usher Is a Super Dad: All About the Singer's 4 Kids

Usher has mostly kept his four kids out of the spotlight, but that doesn't mean he hasn't talked about what his journey as a parent has been like through the years. His oldest children were born in 2007 and 2008 and his youngest children arrived in 2021 and 2022, which means the four are in very different places in their lives now.

In November 2022, a few months after he started his Las Vegas Residency, Usher admitted to talk-show host Tamron Hall that it's not always easy to balance his work schedule with the lives of his four kids. "I try my hardest to base my schedule around the time that they're not in school," he said. "My youngest, the 1 and 2-year-olds, they're here [in Las Vegas], while my two [older] boys are now less interested in spending time with me, oddly."

His older sons do, however, have thoughts on his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show performance. While on The Talk, the singer told viewers that his children will be attendance for the big game and that they've been dishing out some constructive criticism on the show. Usher said that his eldest son, also named Usher "gave me a couple of notes. He gave me a few songs he felt like I should definitely cut, songs I should keep." The pop star, however, didn't say if he'd taken any of the advice.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, here's a look at Usher's life with three sons and one baby girl.

Who are the mothers of Usher's kids?

Tameka Foster

Tameka Foster is the mother of Usher's oldest sons, Usher "Cinco" Raymond V and Naviyd Ely Raymond.

Foster is an author, stylist and entrepreneur who has overcome unimaginable loss. Her 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, was killed in a jet ski collision in 2012 as she was fighting a custody battle with Usher over their two children.

"I learned that I’m stronger than I thought. Nothing could have ever prepared me for the cards that I’ve been dealt," she told Essence in 2022. "I still have times where I fall apart and that’s okay." In addition to Kile, Cinco, and Naviyd, Foster is also mom to Ryan Glover, Jr., and Darrin.

She and Usher married in August 2007 (after abruptly canceling their nuptials in July 2007) and he filed for divorce two years later. After a long custody dispute, a judge granted primary custody of their two children to Usher.

Jenn Goicoechea

Usher's longtime girlfriend, music exec Jenn Goicoechea, grew up in Miami, where she was introduced to the entertainment industry through her mother's work at ACT Productions, an event and multimedia production company. She moved from Florida to California as an adult and began her career working as an assistant to Ciara. These days, she's the senior vice president of A&R at Epic Records, a label owned by Sony Music Entertainment.

Goicoechea and Usher became official in 2019 when they were photographed at a birthday event. Their daughter, Sovereign, was born in September 2020 and their son Sire arrived in September 2021.

Who are Usher's kids?

Usher "Cinco" Raymond V (b. Nov. 27, 2007)

Usher and his ex-wife, Tameka Foster, got married while she was pregnant with their first child. After his son's birth (and while Foster was pregnant with their second child), Usher told People that he felt an "added responsibility" now that he was a father.
"I feel charged," he said. "Life with reason now that you have a child, it’s like, baby’s gotta eat!"

When Cinco was five, he nearly drowned after he got stuck in a pool drain at Usher's home. The event prompted Foster to request an emergency custody hearing, which a judge dismissed.

A year later, Cinco was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which inspired his dad to become involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Promise Ball. Speaking to a reporter at the event, Usher said that his son's experience gave him “a greater deal of appreciation for the bravery that children his age have.”

“A child that every day has to prick himself and has to be cautious of what he eats and also to carry this disorder around; that really is the type of bravery that we all aspire to have," he said.

Usher told Tamron Hall that his oldest prefers to be known as Cinco instead of the famous name he shares with his dad. "I have one son, Cinco, who does not like to be called Usher, who tries to get away from it."

Naviyd Raymond (b. Dec. 10, 2008)

Naviyd joined the family a year after his older brother. His parents separated months after his birth, and Usher was granted primary custody of the pair in 2012.

The singer has made a point to keep his kids mostly out of the spotlight, but he's traveled extensively with his children over the years. In 2016 he told People that one of his favorite memories was from a trip he took to Italy with Cinco and Naviyd when they were 8 and 7 years old.

"I went on an air balloon trip with about 15 people and we were about 3,000 feet in the air," he said. "Both my boys were up there with me ... The whole family was up there. It was cool to just have that little moment away."

While speaking to Extra in 2021, Usher explained the meaning behind his daughter's name. "Sovereign, man, is such a beautiful word and name to me, you know, a supreme ruler is obviously the defined name."

He added, "She's definitely ruling the household, but Sovereign Bo—Bo is at the end of it, so [she's] my little 'reign-bo.'"

He's different than any of my other kids. I've managed to have a little code going with him when I talk to him and how we speak to each other. He makes me mush ... My new little boy, he's something special."
