USC basketball signee Joyce Edwards gets emotional in final high school home game

Joyce Edwards stayed and waited patiently against the wall in the back of Camden’s gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The Camden standout and South Carolina commit stood as members of her friends and family took turns for about 20 minutes, taking pictures with her after the Bulldogs’ 73-29 win in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The game would be Camden’s final home game for Edwards and the rest of her six senior teammates, who went 38-0 at home over their final four seasons.

Camden will travel to Lower Richland on Thursday for a third-round matchup, with the winner headed to Florence for the state semifinals. The Bulldogs defeated the Diamond Hornets in the semifinals last year.

“(Before the game) It kind of brought us all to tears thinking about the growth of Camden basketball from losing in the first round to winning the state championship,” Edwards said. “The fan base has grown and it is amazing.”

Edwards, a McDonald’s All-American, said she got emotional during the team’s pregame meal reflecting on what the program had accomplished over the last few years. She said she would probably shed some more tears with her teammates in the locker room.

Edwards talked about how special it was to play for Camden her entire six years on varsity, despite interest for her to play elsewhere — even out of state — to finish her high school career.

“This place is like home to me,” Edwards said. “Other schools came to get me and I could have gone anywhere else. Camden has treated me nicely.”

With Edwards out front, Camden has established itself as one of the top programs in the state, making it to the state championship in 2022 and winning it all last season.

The Bulldogs also have been able to play in several marquee tournaments and events during that time, including playing in the first girls’ game in Chick-fil-A Classic history.

The Bulldogs are a favorite to repeat and have been ranked No. 1 in 3A all season.

“What a special group and how much we have enjoyed it and want to play well for our fans here,” said Camden coach Natalie Norris, whose daughter Deanna is one of the team’s seniors. “We appreciate what has happened over these last four years.”

As they have much of the season, Camden put the game away early and led 39-8 at halftime. Edwards scored 25 of her 35 points in the first half and came out of the game a couple times in the second half, the last with about four minutes to play. She also had 10 rebounds for 21st double-double of the season.

Deanna Jeffcoat added 12 points and Braylin Mungo had 11 for Camden.
