US Open 2022 Day 5: Serena Williams' career ends after loss to Ajla Tomljanovic

The magic of Serena Williams continues on Day 5 of the U.S Open. Williams won an iconic three-set match Wednesday over No. 2 Anett Kontaveit but lost with her twin sister, Venus, in the women's doubles opening round on Thursday.

Serena Williams' career ends with loss

Serena Williams' career is now over.

Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic beat Williams in a thrilling three-hour battle 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the fourth round of the tournament. The match, which had nearly every fan inside the stadium fighting against Tomljanovic, is almost certainly the last of Williams' career.

Pablo Carreno Busta's wild win

Pablo Carreno Busta came up with perhaps the craziest win of the entire US Open on Friday night.

The Spaniard beat No. 18 Alex De Minaur 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) in the third round with an incredible shot between his legs to end the tiebreak.

The shot, which not only stunned Carreno Busta, left De Minaur furious on the end of the court after the rally.

Coco Gauff wins All-American showdown with Madison Keys

18-year-old Coco Gauff has been American tennis' next big thing for a while now, and she's now reached new ground at Flushing Meadows.

Gauff, seeded 12th, defeated fellow American Madison Keys 6-2, 6-3 in the third round to reach the US Open's fourth round for the first time in her career. A finalist in the 2022 French Open, Gauff hadn't reached as far the fourth round at this tournament since her star turn at 15 years old in 2019.

Next up for Gauff is Zhang Shuai, but her postmatch interview couldn't resist veering into discussion about possibly facing the retiring Serena Williams. Gauff didn't even want to know when she could theoretically face Williams, her idol (it would be in the semifinals), but some fans may already be circling the date.

Casper Ruud puts away Tommy Paul in 5-set fight

It wasn't an easy match for No. 5 seed Casper Ruud. Then it was really easy.

The 23-year-old Norwegian defeated American Tommy Paul 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 5-7, 6-0 to the US Open's fourth round for the first time in his career. As you can imagine from the score, a close match ended anti-climactically, as Ruud didn't even trail in five of the six games in the fifth set.

Paul will want one game in the third set back in particular, as he held a 40-0 lead while serving with a chance to take the set 7-5. Ruud proceeded to win four straight point to take the break and force a tiebreaker.

Matteo Berrettini eliminates Andy Murray

The 13th-seeded Matteo Berrettini missed the 2022 French Open with a hand injury and 2022 Wimbledon due to COVID-19, but he looked consistent as ever on Friday against a fan favorite.

The Italian defeated Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to advance to his seventh-straight fourth round in Grand Slams in which he has participated. It wasn't the cleanest match, with both players combining for 94 unforced errors, but Berrettini's strength of serve won out.

Ons Jabeur takes down Shelby Rogers

American Shelby Rogers had the fifth-seeded Ons Jabeur on the ropes after the first set, but the Tunisian rolled into the fourth round with a three-set win, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Jabeur heads to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in her tennis career after finishing second at Wimbledon in June.

Jack Draper retires after massive upset

Jack Draper looked like he had big things ahead of him after upsetting the sixth-seeded Felix Auger Aliassime in straight sets in the second round, but the win was immediately followed by disappointment.

The British 20-year-old had to retire in the third set of his match against No. 27 seed Karen Khachanov due to an apparent leg injury. At the time, the two players were on serve and nearing a tiebreaker in the third set after splitting the first two sets, with Khachanov up 6-3, 4-6, 6-5.

Veronika Kudermetova delivers serving masterclass

The most dominant win of the day might have come at the Grandstand in the early afternoon, where the 18th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova dominated Dalma Galfi 6-2, 6-2.

How dominant was Kudermetova? She lost two service points across the entire match, while committing only six unforced errors. The entire match lasted 46 minutes.
