United Way falling short of 2023 goal

FREMONT - United Way of Sandusky County is falling short of its $730,000 community campaign goal.

“So far, the fund drive has raised $694,000, 95% of our target,” said Paul Martin, vice-president/general manager at Green Bay Packaging and campaign chairman. “I encourage everyone to give to the campaign. I believe it’s important for all of us to give back to our community and support those who need our help.”

Campaign fund acts as a safety net for 17 agencies

“United Way is like a safety net to its 17 supported agencies; they depend on United Way as a stable source of funding to operate and deliver services year-round. We still hope to receive additional donations to reach the campaign goal so we can continue to provide the same level of support to our funded agencies,” said Martin.

The United Way supports the American Red Cross, Camp Fire Sandusky County, CASA, Fremont City Schools - ACE Mentoring Program, Gibsonburg Exempt Village Schools - Reading Mentoring Program, Girl Scouts, Goodwill Industries, Great Lakes Community Action Partnership, Habitat for Humanity, Liberty Center of Sandusky County, Lutheran Social Services, Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center (for Sandusky County students at Woodmore), Sandusky County 4-H, Sandusky County Family and Children First Council, Sandusky County Public Health, Sandusky County Share and Care Center and YMCA.

United Way has served county for 93 years

According to Jill Simpson, CEO and president of United Way of Sandusky County, United Way has been serving Sandusky County for 93 years and funds programs focused on improving the health and safety of residents; ensuring basic needs such as food and shelter are met; and helping children succeed in school. “These programs help thousands of people every year.”

Simpson further noted that the organization’s administrative and fundraising costs average around 16%, which is impressive when compared to the 35% threshold the Better Business Bureau uses to evaluate nonprofits.

United Way will announce its final campaign results prior to announcing program allocations in May. Contributions to United Way are tax deductible. Gifts of stock and other assets are welcome.
