Union City boys, Coldwater girls excel at Branch County Track Invitational

COLDWATER - For decades the track and field stars of Branch County capped off their regular season with a trip to the prestigious Area Best Meet, with only the best of the best qualifying for the event in order to determine who the best of Branch County really was.

In recent years however the event has seen participation and interest dwindle, mostly due to its timing as it annually took place after the regional tournament and before the state finals, leading to those who did not qualify for state reluctant to continue their season and those that did qualify for state reluctant to compete and risk injury.

To bring the event back to prominence, area coaches met and agreed to change the timing of the event, changing it from the final event of the season to the first event of the season for many of the schools. In addition to the changing of the timing, no longer does an athlete need to be invited to compete at the event, now the Branch County Invitational is an open event, meaning teams can enter whomever they choose. This drew a record number of participants from the four local teams, as athletes from Bronson, Quincy, and Union City traveled to Coldwater’s Cardinal Stadium for this year’s Branch County Invitational.

Stars of the Event

Stars of the event include athletes with multiple wins across the 17 different events.

For Union City it was sophomore long distance ace Ben Gautsche bringing home a pair of wins, taking the gold in the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 8.75 seconds, and the 1600-meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 54.69 seconds.

For the Quincy Orioles it was Clayton Benson leading the way on the boy's side of the tournament, winning the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.15 seconds to go along with a gold medal in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.

On the girl's side of the tournament, it was Quincy’s Brookelyn Parker who swept the hurdle events, winning the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.21 seconds and the 300 hurdles in a time of 51.79 seconds.

Pacing the Coldwater effort was junior Elli Foley who swept the throwing events, winning the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 9 inches and the discus with a throw of 107 feet, 6 inches.

Coldwater senior Jaelah Sloan also claimed a pair of wins, winning the 100 in a time of 13.51 seconds and the high jump with a jump of 4 feet, 8 inches.
