Union City baseball takes title of Colon Darmofal Tournament

COLON – The Union City Charger baseball team captured the championship of the Colon Darmofal Tournament on Saturday, finishing with a 3-1 record and a monster championship win over White Pigeon in the finals.

Union City played White Pigeon three times on Saturday, finishing 2-1 against the Chiefs en route to the championship.

Game one saw Union City defeat White Pigeon by the score of 8-2. The Chargers out-hit White Pigeon 10-3 in the win, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second and three in the third for the 8-2 win.

Owen Jackson recorded the win on the mound, throwing all five innings while allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Jackson walked six batters and struck out three in the victory.

Alex Boyer packed the big bat for Union City, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. Boyer added two RBIs and one walk to go with one run scored.

Ryan Zweng added a pair of hits, including a double, with one RBI and two runs scored while Jackson added a pair of singles with an RBI and two runs scored. Aidan Decker had a double and two RBIs while Reed Goodin, Andrew Tundevold and Brody Taylor all added hits.

Game two of the tournament saw Union City’s offense firing on all cylinders as the Chargers raced past Colon for the 11-0 win. The Chargers out hit Colon 10-5 in the win and scored four runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth for their 11 runs.

Rick Austin secured the win on the mound for Union City after throwing all four innings in the start. Austin allowed five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Zweng led the Charger offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Decker hit his second double of the tournament to go along with an RBI while Eli Payne and Carson Liles all finished with a pair of RBIs. Hunter Sours recorded a hit in his only at-bat.

Union City faced off with White Pigeon for the second time in the tournament in game three, and despite out-hitting the Chiefs the Chargers fell by the score of 10-8. Union City raced out to a 6-2 lead after one inning however White Pigeon put up eight runs in the second and held off any Chargers comeback attempts to take the victory. Union City out hit White Pigeon 6-5 in the game.

Carson Liles took the loss on the mound for the Chargers, throwing one inning in the start, allowing two hits and five runs, four earned, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Rick Austin had a double and an RBI to lead the Charger offense while Taylor also drove in a run.

With the loss to White Pigeon the teams took to the field one more time, winner take all, as the two faced off in the championship game. Union City did all the talking in the championship, exploding for 19 runs on 10 hits enroute to the 19-2 championship victory.

Union City scored five runs in the first, six in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth for their 19 runs while White Pigeon added a run in the first and a run in the third.

Boyer took the win on the mound for Union City, throwing three innings in the start, allowing three hits and two runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

It was Zweng who continued to swing the hot bat, finishing with two hits, including a double, with three runs scored to lead the Charger offense.

Liles, Jackson, and Decker all had multi-hit games while Jackson, Decker, Tucker Zweng, and Austin all added two RBIs in the victory. Liles, Boyer, and Jacob Wells all had an RBI in the win.

With the tournament win Union City improves to 12-13 overall on the season. The Chargers will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Quincy for a key Big 8 conference doubleheader.
