Uniform frenzy by Jaguars, Jets! Isn't it time Dolphins finally make throwbacks permanent?

The way we figure it, in a state with three NFL teams, there are two ways to command fans’ attention in Florida:

1. Win. (No kidding.)

2. Have uniforms fans want to wear.

Shots were fired Monday when the Jacksonville Jaguars announced classic throwback threads for 2024. This rocked the state much like that earthquake on the East Coast 1 1/2 weeks ago, with fans shrieking, “Wait. The Jags have been around long enough to have throwbacks?” (Answer: According to the Jags, yes.)

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their creamsicle throwbacks they wore last season. You know, the famous orange-colored jerseys with Bucco Bruce on the helmet, conjuring fond memories for South Florida fans of the years the Dolphins were unquestioned state champs.

Plus, the New York Jets on Monday unveiled their new “Legacy Collection” uniforms for 2024. They’re a takeoff on the New York Sack Exchange era (1979-89). Owner Woody Johnson said Jets fans wanted a return to the team’s roots “and we heard them.”

With all this uniform commotion going on, it’s a good time to reiterate our stance that the Dolphins should bring back their throwbacks — for good. Currently, they were them twice a year, with the Hard Rock Stadium field dressed up with a retro 1960s look. For a franchise that cherishes its history as much as the Dolphins, this pays homage to their glory years but also gives players a cleaner, more appealing look than the current uniforms. New doesn’t always mean improved.

“I love our throwbacks,” Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel said in February at the Dolphins Challenge Cancer event. “I love when we wear them. I love celebrating our history. I think they’re very appropriate for celebrating our history. And it keeps them special that we wear them a couple of times a year.”

All it would take is for owner Stephen Ross to agree with a loud (and by all indications, a majority) of fans who prefer the original uniforms over the current ones. Notify the NFL of the intent to switch and the wheels will be in motion to eventually make it happen.

Best of all, any concerns about the cost of switching surely would be offset in the team shop once a new generation of fans decides it’s time to upgrade their uniform game to a new/old look that’ll never go out of style.
