UNC football coach Mack Brown announces Tar Heels have hired new cornerbacks coach
North Carolina football coach Mack Brown named Jason Jones the Tar Heels’ new cornerbacks coach on Monday, replacing UNC great Dre Bly. Jones spent the past three seasons coaching safeties at Indiana, where he also worked with current UNC defensive backs coach Charlton Warren.
Brown said in a release that Jones had “a number of attractive offers available” before choosing the Tar Heels.
“Jason has a wealth of experience coaching the secondary, and having worked with coach Warren previously, he already has a firm understanding of our approach on defense. He has a proven track record of developing players across the secondary, many of whom have seen success in the NFL, and I’m looking forward to seeing him work with our cornerbacks moving forward.”
Jones helped Indiana’s secondary lead the Big Ten in interceptions in 2020. The ACC will mark the fourth major conference in which he’s coached. Jones also had stops at Mississippi and Oklahoma State.
Jones will be working with a very different secondary. Starting corners Tony Grimes (Texas A&M), Storm Duck (Penn State) and starting safety Cam Kelly (Virginia) all transferred out. Carolina welcomed in transfers Derrik Allen (Georgia Tech), Armani Chatman (Virginia Tech), Alijah Huzzie (East Tennessee State) and Antavious Lane (Georgia State).
Bly played cornerback at UNC from 1996-98 and finished his career as a college Hall of Famer. He coached under Brown all four seasons of his second tenure in Chapel Hill before the school announced they mutually agreed to part ways this month.
