UNC Carolina shooter - latest: Suspect arrested after faculty member killed during Chapel Hill shooting

A suspect is in custody following reports of an active shooting situation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday.

Local law enforcement and UNC officials issued an alert just after 1pm Monday about “an armed and dangerous person” on or near the campus. Police said during a press conference that a faculty member was killed in the shooting.

“The students are certainly traumatised,” UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin M Guskiewicz said. “But I want to commend those who were inside the building ensuring everyone’s safety.”

A suspect was arrested near a residential area 10 minutes away from campus, but the weapon used in the shooting has yet to be recovered. Local police are searching a residence on William Circle, WRAL reported.

Students were ordered to shelter in place as police and paramedics responded to the scene where at least one shot was allegedly heard near Caudil Labs. Around 4.15pm, UNC Police lifted the shelter-in-place order.

Motive remains unclear

The motive for the shooting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which left one faculty member dead remains under investigation following the arrest of the suspected gunman.

Officials confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody around three hours on from the shooting.

Neither the victim nor the suspect have been publicly identified by officials.

It is not clear if the attack was targeted or random and if the pair knew each other prior to the shooting.

Police were searching for both the weapon and the motive in a shooting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that left one faculty member dead and prompted an hours-long lockdown.

The assailant in Monday afternoon’s shooting at a science building in the heart of the flagship university’s campus was taken into custody about an hour and a half after the gunfire was first reported.

Neither the suspect nor the victim were immediately identified and it wasn’t clear whether they knew each other. Formal charges were pending.

“To actually have the suspect in custody gives us an opportunity to figure out the why and even the how, and also helps us to uncover a motive and really just why this happened today. Why today, why at all?” UNC Police Chief Brian James said.

“And we want to learn from this incident and we will certainly work to do our best to ensure that this never happens again on the UNC campus.”

America is on pace for its worst year of mass shootings in a decade. What’s driving the record-breaking surge?

09:30 , Josh Marcus

Even for a country with more guns than people, the level of mass shootings in the US in 2023 has been shocking. The incidents have ranged from campus shootings, like a massacre inside a Nashville elementary school that killed six in March, to a mass shooting at a mall in Texas this month that killed eight, carried out by a neo-Nazi.

This year could be the worst for mass shootings in a decade, according to an analysis of Gun Violence Archive data by The Guardian.

America sets horrifying 17-year record for mass killings

09:00 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

The US saw more mass killings in the first half of this year than any other six-month period over the last 17 years, horrifying data shows.

There were more than 28 mass killings between 1 January and 30 June, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University.

Previously, the record for a six-month period was 27 – which was set in the second half of 2022.

The database defines a mass killing as an incident where four or more people are killed, not including the attacker, within a 24-hour period.

“The scenes out of UNC-Chapel Hill are heartbreaking, and something that no student, teacher, or parent should ever have to live through,” said senator Thom Tillis.

“Susan and I mourn the innocent life taken. We must all continue to work together to protect our schools, confront the nation’s mental health crisis, and keep firearms out of the wrong hands.”

Is gun violence worse in red states?

Democratic-led cities are frequently depicted as leading centres of gun violence, but that obscures the bigger picture: shooting deaths occur across the US – and red states have some of the worst records.

Students crowded in gym locker rooms to stay safe

After the university went into lockdown, students crowded gym locker rooms away from windows in order to stay safe.

Adrian Lanier, a sophomore computer science major, said he and others sat against a wall in a gym, trying to stay as far away as possible from doors and windows as rumors spread.

“No one really felt safe enough to leave. I didn’t,” Mr Lanier told Associated Press.

Oliver Katz, an exchange student from Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, said some students crowded into gym locker rooms to get away from windows while others crouched in corners and sat on the floor.

“This never happens where I’m from,” Mr Katz said.

“It was intense. But I was a little surprised that other people weren’t panicking that much.”Mr Katz, who has only been on campus for two weeks, said he’s worried his home university will bring the exchange students back early.

“I don’t want to leave. I like it here, and I do still feel safe.”

Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz apologised to students who are “feeling uncertain about your safety right now”.

This is the second week of the fall semester at the college.

A gunman killed a faculty member in a science building at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, forcing the college to temporarily go into a lockdown.

Police arrested the suspect over three hours after the initial reports of shots fired came in from Caudill Labs, officials said at a news conference.

Emergency sirens were sounded about two minutes after a 911 caller reported gunfire around 1pm at the laboratory in the heart of the flagship campus.

The students and faculty members reportedly barricaded themselves in dorm rooms, offices and classrooms until the lockdown was lifted around 4.15pm.

“This loss is devastating, and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our campus community,” chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said.

A shooting on the campus of the University of North Carolina set off chaos as students sought to flee after getting an emergency alert on their phones.“I rushed outside assuming that would be the best location since they would most likely target larger crowds since I was in a large lecture of maybe 250–300 people,” one student told Fox News. “Once I went outside, I saw people running in the direction of the Genome Science building. I decided to take the corner and investigate to see what was going on.

“One of my friends worked with him in the chemistry lab. However, he graduated this past year and was not [there]. Overall, it was extremely unexpected. I would always see stuff in the news but never expected to see things like this in person first-hand taking place,” the student added.

A UNC student who knew the man arrested for Monday’s shooting said he was stunned to learn his colleague was wanted for allegedly fatally shooting a faculty member.

"I would have never guessed that he would be the kind of person who could possibly be capable of this kind of thing," graduate student Aiden Scott told WRAL. "He was always very quiet."

UNC student describes being present for third campus shooting in his life

Jeremy Fine, who is studying medicine and mental health police at UNC, told ABC 11 he has lived through three active shooter events in his lifetime.

“This is the the third time in my life I’ve with something like this, and I’ve gotta say it’s probably the scariest time,” he said.

He and a group of students and faculty hid in a men’s bathroom for hours until they got the all-clear.

The MD-PhD student also told the station he’s tired of the media and policymakers blaming shootings on severe mental illness, noting that only a small fraction of those who commit shootings have a diagnosed mental health disorder.

“It moves us backwards.”

Instead, he argued, the focus should be put on access to guns and health care.
