UNC basketball’s full nonconference schedule is out. Who the Tar Heels play, and when

The UNC men’s and women’s basketball teams have released their complete nonconference schedules, and both teams have several marquee matchups, some of which had already been announced.

The Tar Heels’ men’s team, led by returning starters Armando Bacot and RJ Davis, host Radford on Monday, Nov. 6, in the season opener, the first of 11 regular-season, non-league games.

Following two more games at the Dean E. Smith Center against Lehigh and UC Riverside, UNC begins a seven-game swing that includes six games at neutral sites, starting with three games in the Bahamas in the Battle 4 Atlantis. This is the third time the Tar Heels are competing in the Battle 4 Atlantis

Tennessee travels to Chapel Hill for just the second time in 75 years when the Tar Heels and Volunteers play on Nov. 29 in the first ACC-SEC Challenge.

On Dec. 5, the Tar Heels return to Madison Square Garden to play Connecticut, the 2023 NCAA champion, in the Jimmy V Classic.

The CBS Sports Classic heads to State Farm Arena in Atlanta for a UNC-Kentucky and UCLA-Ohio State doubleheader on Dec. 16.

Carolina and Oklahoma square off in the second Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte on Dec. 20. Last year, the Tar Heels defeated Michigan in the Spectrum Center in the inaugural Jumpman Invitational.

Carolina concludes its regular-season nonconference schedule on Dec. 29 in the Smith Center against Charleston Southern.

The Carolina women have an equally ambitious slate of nonconference games, though they’ll stay a lot closer to home for most of them.

For third year in a row, the Tar Heels open the season against a team coming off an NCAA appearance, this time Gardner-Webb, which visits Carmichael on Nov. 8.

Other home games against Davidson (Nov. 12), Hampton (Nov. 15) and Elon (Nov. 18) follow before the Tar Heels hit the road for the first time, headed to Florida where they’ll face Vermont on Nov. 24 in the opener of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Also in the field are national runner-up Iowa and second-round NCAA team Florida Gulf Coast, 2023 WNIT participants Kansas State and Western Kentucky, as well as Delaware and Purdue-Fort Wayne.

The Tar Heels return from Florida to host South Carolina on Nov. 30 as part of the ACC-SEC Challenge. After winning the NCAA title in 2022, the Gamecocks reached the Final Four again in 2023.

UNC travels to Uncasville, Connecticut, to take on perennial powerhouse UConn on Dec. 10 as part of the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase.

The Tar Heels close out nonconference play at the Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte, facing Oklahoma on Dec. 19.

The UNC women finished the 2022-23 season 22-11 and played in the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row, reaching the second round. The Tar Heels return three starters and welcome eight newcomers: a highly-ranked five-member freshman class and three transfer students in Lexi Donarski, Maria Gakdeng and Indya Nivar.

The Atlantic Coast Conference will announce its entire schedule, including league games, in September.
