UK police investigating shooting threat. University: ‘No threat’ to campus safety

University of Kentucky police are investigating a shooting threat that was posted to social media overnight, school spokesperson Jay Blanton confirmed.

The threat was posted on Yik Yak, UK police confirmed in a tweet Thursday morning. Blanton confirmed that UK was aware of it.

“UK Police are aware of the reported post and are investigating,” Blanton said.

Blanton said that UK didn’t believe there was a threat to safety and no warnings were issued to the campus community.

“There is no reason to believe that there is a threat to campus safety,” Blanton said.

It’s unknown if the individual responsible for making the threat has been contacted by police.

“Our first priority is the safety of our campus community — we will communicate as more details become available,” UK police said in a tweet.

UK had not shared more information about the incident as of press time Thursday.

This is the second threat posted to Yik Yak and directed toward a Kentucky university in recent weeks. In September, Western Kentucky University arrested an individual who allegedly posted a bomb threat to the social media service Yik Yak. The threat wound up being unfounded, WKU officials said.
