UIL state track: Roosevelt's Dakota Zuber adds another pole vault medal

AUSTIN — Even his brother agreed, Dakota Zuber now holds bragging rights in the family.

The Roosevelt senior cleared 15 feet to earn silver in the Class 3A boys pole vault at the UIL state track and field meet Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. That gives Zuber two state medals after he placed third in his debut last year.

Justin Scott, a 2015 Roosevelt grad, was state champion as a senior. His first-place 15-3 vault was the school record until April, when Zuber cleared 15-6 at the area meet.

So, which résumé gets the edge?

"He's definitely beat me," Scott said. "He's got the school record, too, so it's definitely his."

Zuber had a couple of tense moments Thursday. He entered the competition at 14-0 and missed his first two attempts. He recovered, and also cleared 15-0 on his final try too. That was just behind gold-medalist Trevor Upton of Maypearl, who won with 15-3.

It wasn't his best outing, but Zuber was content, considering the elements.

"It doesn't feel as good as gold, but it feels pretty good to have two state medals," Zuber said. "… The wind was hitting and I didn't bring the right poles. But you can only do so much."

Scott, a firefighter in San Marcos, made the short drive to watch his brother. He said it reminded him of when he competed. Scott went on to pole vault "for a little bit" at South Plains College.

Zuber is still weighing his options, with dreams of vaulting at Texas Tech. Scott certainly sees a bright future for the back-to-back medalist.

"I see college track in his future, big things," Scott said. "Proud of him."
