UD student, who was Eagle Scout, killed in motorcycle crash near Dover

A University of Delaware student and Eagle Scout was killed in a motorcycle crash near Dover on Tuesday, according to Delaware State Police.

The victim, identified publicly Saturday as 18-year-old Ethan Statham of Dover was driving his motorcycle east on Hazlettville Road, east of Apple Grove Road, at 5:16 p.m.

A red 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling west on the same road and attempted to make a left turn into the driveway of a private residence. The Dodge struck the front tire of Statham's black 2022 Kawasaki EX4 motorcycle, police believe, throwing the teen off of his motorcycle and onto the westbound lane of traffic.

Statham was pronounced dead at the scene. The 57-year-old driver of the pickup was unharmed, police say. The crash was first reported Wednesday, but Statham's name was withheld until family could be notified.

In an obituary posted online, his family wrote that Statham was an honor student at Camden's Caesar Rodney High School, an avid nature photographer and player of the French horn and mellophone, and one of the youngest to achieve Eagle rank in Scouts. Statham was working toward a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Delaware.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash and asks anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Sgt. A. Mitchell by calling 302-698-8518.Reporter Matthew Korfhage can be reached at mkorfhage@delawareonline.com.
