The University Station post office at the University of Texas will shutter later this month, according to the U.S. Postal Service and yellow signs announcing the closure “due to unforeseen circumstances."

In a statement to the American-Statesman, the Postal Service said the office's lease at 306 Inner Campus Drive was not renewed and operations will cease at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 after being housed at that location for decades.

“The Postal Service is continuing to actively explore viable options for another location,” the agency's statement said.

Post office customers can access retail services at Central Park Station at 3507 N Lamar Blvd., a little less than 2 miles away from the university location. The Central Park Station is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Postal Service added that existing University Station P.O. box customers can obtain a P.O. box at the Central Park, Capitol or West Austin offices “at no additional cost" for the rest of their terms. It said customers have received a letter with more details.

The University Station post office, located in the lower floor of West Mall Office Building, provides services such as passport photos, P.O. box rentals, money orders, priority mail, greeting cards and stamps.

UT Mail Services picks up, processes and distributes departmental campus mail and outgoing departmental mail concerning official university business.

"We appreciate the patience of our valued customers as we work through this transition," the USPS said.
