Tyrann Mathieu Sends Clear Message After Saints Visit

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu took a trip to New Orleans to visit the Saints.

After seeing Marcus Williams leave and Malcolm Jenkins retire, New Orleans is in dire need of safety depth. A homecoming for the Louisiana native makes plenty of sense, especially given the Saints’ lack of depth at safety.

But does Mathieu actually want to play for the Saints? Well, his comments following his visit seem to suggest he’d welcome a return home.

“First and foremost, it’s a great opportunity with Dennis Allen stepping into the lead position,” Mathieu said, via The Advocate.

Here’s more of what he had to say:

“…It’s a team I grew up watching. Any time I get to play in front of family and friends, it obviously gives me more energy. It would be a great opportunity if that was to come.”

When talking about the Saints defense, Mathieu said he’s spoken with several players. He also knows the unit has been successful and doesn’t necessarily “need” him.

“Those guys have done a great thing,” Mathieu said. “The last couple years, they’ve been like top five in defense. I don’t think they really need me, but it would be good to go back home and help them win.”

Will Tyrann sign with the Saints?
