Tyrann Mathieu is ready to explore the free-agency market, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“My understanding is he’s going to test the market,” Rapoport said Sunday on NFL Network. “I think there is a chance he’s back in Kansas City, but they have so many priorities.”

Rapoport said Mathieu, who just finished a three-year, $42 million contract, “probably breaks double digits” in terms of annual salary.

The 29-year-old has made two Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams during his three seasons in Kansas City. Among the NFL’s most versatile defenders, the defensive back tallied 76 tackles, six pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, and a touchdown last season.

Mathieu has previously expressed a desire to stay put. At the NFL Honors ceremony last month, he said the “hope and the dream is to continue to be a Kansas City Chief.”

However, the Honey Badger made a cryptic Twitter post Saturday seemingly directed at the Chiefs.

“Replacing me is easy,” Mathieu wrote. “Getting them to do the same thing I did is damn near impossible.”

Mathieu’s multi-faceted skillset should make him a desirable option in free agency. Considering he’s already helped Kansas City reach two Super Bowls and win one Lombardi Trophy, the organization should make a concerted effort to make sure he’s still patrolling its secondary next season.
