At 29 years old and coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Tyrann Mathieu probably should have a contract by now. Instead, he’s lamenting how things went at the end of his tenure is KC.

Speaking to Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, Mathieu had one word to describe how he was feeling when he learned the Chiefs didn’t offer him a deal like Justin Reid. “Heartbroken” was the word he used to describe how he felt.

“Bro, I was depressed,” Mathieu said. “Heartbroken. Heart. Broken. “I could not understand it. I could not, man.”

Mathieu complained that if the Chiefs had offered him the three-year, $31.5 million deal they offered Reid, he would have taken it. Though he admitted that he still might have negotiated the price.

“To be honest if they would’ve offered me Justin Reid’s deal, obviously I would’ve tried to negotiate, but if that’s where they drew their line in the sand, I probably would’ve took it. I probably would’ve took it,” Mathieu said.

Tyrann Mathieu is a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro selection. He’s been a model of health as well, missing just two games in the last five years.

In his three seasons with the Chiefs, Mathieu started 47 games, making 13 interceptions, 27 passes defended, 213 tackles and 3.0 sacks.

He’ll be 30 when the 2022 season starts and can probably start for all but a handful of NFL teams. It will be interesting to see how long it takes Mathieu to find a team.
