Two-way play and red-hot hitters: Vote for IHSAA baseball player of Week 3

Congrats to Mateo Wells of Zionsville for winning of Player of the Week for Weeks 1 and 2. The High Point commit has made two strong starts for Zionsville this season. He struck out eight over four innings against Collierville (Tenn.). He followed his first start with a dominant outing against Fishers. Wells went the distance, striking out seven and allowing just three hits in the shutout win.

Here are this week's nominees.

Eli Bennett, Cathedral

The IU commit has been a strong two-way presence for Cathedral over the last two weeks. Bennett went 1-for-3 with a home run against Center Grove. On the mound, Bennett helped the Fighting Irish beat Homestead, throwing five inning of one-run ball, striking out five and allowing one hit.

Carson Bush, Center Grove

The junior has been a breakout performer for Center Grove. Over the last two weeks, Bush is batting .363 with five runs scored and two RBI. For the season, Bush is batting .548 with a .580 on-base percentage and a .666 slugging percentage.

Ryan Castetter, University

The Northwestern commit has started his sophomore season strong. In his last two appearances, Castetter has not allowed an earned run, striking out seven and walking none over six innings. At the plate, he's slashing .500/.576/.731 with 12 RBI and six doubles.

Anthony Dennison, Warren Central

The freshman is having a solid debut season. Over the last two weeks, Bennison is 5-for-8 (.625) with two runs scored, two RBI and one double. On the mound, Dennison has allowed two runs over 5⅔ innings, striking out four and walking three.

Desmond Francis, Park Tudor

The sophomore is establishing himself as a dynamic pure hitter. Over the two last weeks, Francis is batting .500 with five runs scored, one double, one triple, four RBI and four stolen bases. He added six strikeouts over 2⅓ innings against Bethesda Christian.

Drew Fredenburg, Shenandoah

The sophomore has been a two-way force for Shenandoah. Fredenburg is batting .454 with 10 runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, one triple and one home run over the last two weeks. On the mound, he added a five-inning complete game, striking out seven and allowing just one hit against Monroe Central.

Ben Hammond, Fishers

The senior has been on fire at the plate for Fishers. Over the last two weeks, Hammond is 12-for-22 (.545) with five runs scored, six RBI, five doubles, one triple and one home. On the mound, Hammond has two saves, striking out one and allowing two earned runs over 3⅓ innings.

Dylan Henry, Roncalli

Roncalli has been playing well as a team, thanks in a part to Henry's scorching hot bat. Henry is batting .470 with eight RBI, four fours scored and two home runs over the last two weeks.

Brendin Oliver, Mooresville

The Cincinnati commit followed up a seven-strikeout win over Decatur Central with a dominant outing against Perry Meridian. Oliver recorded 14 strikeouts during a no-hit shutout. Oliver faced 25 batters total, walking three. For the season, Oliver is 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 35 strikeouts over 19 innings.

Michael Thorpe, New Palestine

Thorpe's been a dominant two-way presence for New Palestine. In his last two starts, Thorpe is 2-0, allowing just one earned with 18 strikeouts over 11 innings. At the plate, Thorpe is batting .500 with one run scored, seven RBI, one triple and one double.
