Two unbeaten teams: Cape Cod, Islands high school girls lacrosse rankings

The Cape Cod and Islands girls lacrosse teams have some of the best talent in the state.

As of Friday morning's updated MIAA power rankings, 12 Cape and Island teams would be in the postseason, with five of them being ranked in the top 10.

Two teams have not yet suffered a loss, while seven other teams have a record at .500 or better.

With all that success, this is going to be a tough list to make.

Presenting the first girls lacrosse rankings of the season.

1. Nantucket (13-0)

The first team on this list wasn't a hard decision. The Whalers are one of two unbeaten teams on the Cape and Islands, and have the highest rankings (2nd, Div. 4) of any team as well. Their offense is the best and competitors are not even close. Over the first 13 games of the season, Nantucket has scored at least 14 goals in each game for a total of 220 goals, which is just under 17 goals per game.

This offensive frenzy is led by senior captains Bailey Lower and Emerson Pekarcik, who are arguably the best one-two punch on the Cape and Islands. The duo has help from players like Cydney Mosscrop, Mayson Lower, Dylan Damian, and Suz Peraner. The defense is just as solid as the offense as the Whalers have only given up double-digit points in one game this season. Goalie Claire Misurelli has also been solid in goal as well. Nobody has been able to figure out how to stop Nantucket's offense yet, and if they keep this consistent play on both sides up, they could make a deep run in the playoffs.

2. Sandwich (12-0)

The Lady Knights are probably the most consistent team of late, always among state contenders each season. Their defense has been the leading factor in their success this season. They have not given up over seven goals to any opponent so far. The offense has been key as well, scoring in double digits in every game except one.

Sandwich has a lot of depth this season, which is great to have for a lacrosse team. Most of the players on the field know how to find the back of the net. Kyla Darmon, Quinn Anderson, Kolbie Darmon, Avery Cobban, Aubrie Schwager and Elisabeth Stutzman are just some of the frequent contributors. The Lady Knights have made the Elite Eight the last two seasons, and off to their best start since 2008 appear to be on their way for a third consecutive visit.

3. Cape Cod Academy (8-3)

The Seahawks get the third spot on this list with wins against Nauset, Monomoy, Upper Cape, St. John Paul II, Falmouth and Barnstable. In their eight wins, they are averaging 15 goals a game. Competitive in most games this season, the team had a two-point loss to Nauset and a last-second loss to Barnstable. Ella Bartolomei, Quinn Powers, Olivia Powers and Tricia Carr are some of the offensive contributors, while goalie Emma Davis has played well in goal. They are currently ranked seventh in Div. 3 and will be a team that can go far when their offense is at its best.

4. St. John Paul II (10-4)

The Lions have found their groove as they are riding an eight-game win streak, that includes wins over Nauset and Monomoy. Three of their four losses have come at the hands of top 10-ranked teams (Nauset, Nantucket, Cape Cod Academy). They have a 9-0 record in the Cape and Islands League.

Katelyn Lawson, Akira Umbrello, Emma Tucker, Mia Curley, Sophie Philbrick and Charlotte Sturgis have been the offensive players who have led the Lions during the streak in which they are averaging 13 goals per games. Keira Nakachi has played well in goal, while Lili Crofford, Anna Corsi, Marlo Jumper, Winnie Hatch, and Meah Dalrymple have also been key pieces on defense. If the Lions can keep winning, they may be a team to watch for in the postseason.

5. Falmouth

This last spot was tough but I'm going to go with the Clippers because of their wins over Dartmouth (21st, Div.2), Nauset (10th, Div. 3), Monomoy (14th, Div. 4), and Division 1 teams Bridgewater-Raynham and Barnstable, who they beat twice each. They have had some losses to tough competition, twice facing Notre Dame Academy-Hingham, the top seed in Division 2. In addition to that, they also dropped games to Old Rochester (11th, Div. 3), Marshfield (15th, Div. 2), Cohasset (3rd, Div. 4), Cape Cod Academy (7th, Div. 3), and Nantucket (2nd, Div. 4). When the offense is rolling, they usually are in the win column, scoring in double digits in six of their seven wins, and have been kept to single digits in six of their seven losses.

Honorable Mention

Nauset (7-6)

The Warriors are ranked in the top 10 of Division 3 (10th) because their schedule has not been the easiest. They have lost some of the best the state has to offer: Sandwich (7th, Div. 4), Nantucket twice (2nd, Div. 4), Falmouth (9th, Div. 3), Cape Cod Academy (7th, Div. 3), and the red hot St. John Paul II Lions. They also have key wins over St. John Paul II (19th, Div. 3), Cape Cod Academy (7th, Div. 3), and Barnstable (Div. 1). Julia Kipperman, Sienna Reeves, Coral Punch, and Zoe Labdon have been the offensive leaders for Nauset so far.

Upper Cape (10-3)

The Rams are a good team led by seniors Adryanna Turner and Aliana Hines, but they only have one win over a team above .500. With that being said, they only lost to Cape Cod Academy by five, and led unbeaten South Shore Tech 8-5 at halftime and took them to overtime before falling short.
