Two tornados touched down in Walworth County Tuesday, weather service confirms

The National Weather Service's Milwaukee/Sullivan forecast office confirmed Wednesday afternoon that two tornados touched down in southeastern Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon.

One of the tornados touched down across far southern Walworth County. The tornado produced estimated 80 mph winds and was given an EF-0 rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, said local NWS meteorologist Ben Miller. It spun up in Illinois and crossed the state line a few miles east of Sharon, Wis., and continued northeast to just east of Walworth.

The second tornado was short-lived and traveled less than a quarter of a mile in an area 1 to 2 miles south of Darien, Miller said. This was an EF-1 tornado and produced estimated 90 mph winds.

Both tornados started around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Miller said. Walworth County was under a tornado warning at the time.

NWS received reports of tree and barn damage in Walworth County following the tornados. Members of the weather service team were out in Walworth County assessing the damage Wednesday morning and is expected to provide a more detailed report on the tornados.
